2.4.3.7 - Lack of Lordship
He also learned from Shaykh al-Ureybi some of the sublime meanings that refine the soul and purify the heart, such as that mentioned in the following commandment he stated in Chapter 559 of the Meccan Revelations:
Be “poor from God”, as you are “poor to Him”. This is like the saying of the Prophet peace be upon him: “and I seek refuge with You from You.” The meaning of your “poverty from God” is that you do not have any kind of lordship in yourself, but be a pure servant. Just as servanthood is not proper with respect to God, and that’s absolutely impossible to describe Him with, because He is an absolute Lord, so you are a pure servant. Be with God according to your value, not according to your own entity, because your entity has a trace of lordship since you are created according to the Divine Form. But your value/state is not. This was recommended by my Shaykh and my teacher Abu al-Abbas al-Ureybi, may Allah have mercy on him: Your value acts according to its state and not according to its claim, thus you should be like that; whenever your ego says to you: “be rich in God”, you should know that you are being commanded to act like a lord, thus you should say: I am poor to God and to what God has impoverished me to, for example He has impoverished me to salt in my dough. [Futuhat: IV.482].
